Romans 6:6-11
For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin - because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Reflection
When reading these few verses, I think about how once I turned to Christ in my mess and in my sin, He made me completely and totally new in Him. The old me was killed with Christ, along with all the sins I had committed, still commit, and have yet to commit. By realizing I was lost, God created and changed me from the inside out. The sin that once controlled me and enticed me was put under a new power - the power of Christ.
In The Message Bible, a part of these verses are translated "Sin speaks a dead language that means nothing to you...you are dead to sin and alive to God". How incredible! God has killed the part of me that was controlled by sin and made me alive to Him and in Him. Sin will always be a battle because we are human. But the choice to sin is now in our power. My body will constantly fight with my spirt to commit sin and go against God. It is not wrong to struggle with sin, even Christ was tempted. For that very reason, we are encouraged that when we died with Christ, our physical bodies were counted as less important than our spiritual bodies because our spiritual bodies will live forever with Christ! "so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin..." So in this freedom Christ has given us from sin, we can rejoice in Christ's death - which set us free from the debt of our sin - and in Christ's resurrection - which empowers us with eternal life to be shared with Him.
